Elissa Epel, Ph.D, is a Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Psychiatry, at University of California, San Francisco. She is the Director of the Aging, Metabolism, and Emotions Center (www.amecenter.ucsf.edu), Associate Director of the Center for Health and Community and the NIDDK UCSF NORC, member of the National Academy of Medicine, and past President of the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research and Co-Chair of the Mind and Life Institute Steering Council.
Dr. Laura Esserman, M.D., M.B.A is a surgeon and breast cancer oncology specialist practicing at the UCSF Breast Care Center where she has also held the position of Director since 1996. She co-leads the Breast Oncology Program, the largest of the UCSF Helen Diller Comprehensive Cancer Center's multidisciplinary programs. The program is comprised of 69 faculty members who represent 16 academic specialties and is internationally recognized and well-established with major initiatives in epidemiology, genetics, biology, therapeutics, and clinical cancer care.
Carroll L. Estes is Professor Emerita of Sociology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) where she founded and directed the campus-wide Institute for Health & Aging (1979-1998), and chaired the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences (1981-1992) in the School of Nursing. Dr Estes is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and past President of three national organizations in aging: The Gerontological Society of America (GSA), the American Society on Aging (ASA) and the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE). Dr.
Dr. Mica Estrada received her Ph.D. (1997) in Social Psychology from Harvard University and now Associate Dean of Diversity, Inclusion and Equity for the School of Nursing and a Professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the Institute for Health and Aging at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Her research program focuses on social influence, including the study of identity, values, forgiveness, well-being, and integrative education.
My program of research focuses on precision medicine and risk for type 2 diabetes in high risk racial groups. Specifically, I am studying the utility of epigenetic biomarkers for risk detection and prediction of response to risk-reduction interventions. Current studies include investigation of microRNA expression in individuals who are insulin resistant, and prediction of response to both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions.
I am an Associate Professor of Nursing in the Department of Community Health Systems, School of Nursing, at the University of California, San Francisco. I am a researcher that uses community-based participatory research methods both in the United States and the Caribbean where I leverage multi-methods data to inform culturally relevant interventions that improves the lives of vulnerable sexual and gender minorities. I have also spent the past several years researching factors that contribute to poor health among Caribbean sexual and gender minorities.
Krista Harrison, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Division of Geriatrics and the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies (IHPS). Her research aims to mitigate suffering by improving models of care & policies for older adults living with, dying from, and grieving neurodegenerative diseases and other serious illnesses.
Dr. DeRouen is a cancer epidemiologist with dual training in cancer biology and epidemiology. Her ongoing research efforts are focused on cancer prevention and control and address cancer disparities due to multi-level determinants, especially social determinants of health. Dr. DeRouen has experience with pooling and harmonizing complex multi-level data, including contextual-level data and data from electronic health records, from disparate sources and designing studies of multi-level data to study cancer disparities.
